As a kid growing up in the 80's my first loves were, Renee (my 4th grade classmate), Nakiya (my 5th grade classmate),
Jayne Kennedy and
"The Jamaica Girl". No she's not
Rachel from
BET's old show
Video Soul but she however was nameless to us all and throughout Brooklyn her famous poster adorned the walls of Jamaican restaurants, travel agencies, barber shops, salons and any black owned business in the hood revealing her smooth caramel skin, doey eyes, inviting smile, coolie hair and a wet Jamaica t-shirt with the body of a goddess underneath. After a little research I found out
"The Jamiaca Girl" poster wasn't that of a Jamaican girl after all but rather a Trinidadian girl named
Sintra Arunte Bronte who was so beautiful that she caught the eye of a photographer from an American advertising company commissioned by a Jamaican tourist company to create an eye catching poster for their company some 26 years ago and boy did she catch eyes. Trini or no Trini though she'll always be my Jamaican gyal. -
